Installation

Installation Steps

Plan Your Deck

  • Measure and mark the area where you want to install the decking
  • Plan the layout, considering the direction of the boards and any design elements

Prepare the Substructure

  • Ensure your substructure (joists and beams) is solid and level
  • Use pressure-treated lumber for the substructure to prevent rot
  • Space joists according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, typically around 16 inches on center

Install the Ledger Board

  • If attaching the deck to your house, secure a ledger board using lag screws
  • Ensure the ledger is level and properly flashed to prevent water damage

Start Installing Deck Boards

  • Begin at the outer rim and work your way inward
  • Allow for a 1/4-inch gap between boards to account for expansion
  • Pre-drill holes at the ends of boards to prevent splitting.
  • Secure boards to the joists using stainless steel deck screws.

Cutting and Trimming

  • Use a saw to cut boards to the desired length
  • Ensure cut ends are hidden within the deck’s perimeter or covered with end caps or trim.

Decking Patterns and Design

  • Consider adding design elements like picture frames, parting boards, or inlay patterns if desired.

Check for Level and Alignment

  • Use a level to ensure the deck boards are level and align properly

Finishing Touches

  • Install fascia boards or trim along the edges for a polished look.
  • Attach end caps if your composite decking brand provides them.

Maintenance and Cleaning

  • Regularly clean your composite decking to maintain its appearance.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for cleaning and care.

Safety

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves when working with composite decking.
